How We Got Here

The Kapoho Coffee Company was formed in 1907 by Sam D'Astoria, an Italian sailor who visited Hilo and liked it so much he stayed on. A native of Italy and an insatiable coffee drinker, Sam yearned for good coffee and started growing it on a small estate in the south corner of the Island of Hawaii.

The word of Sam's great coffee soon spread across the Island. In 1959, Sam's grandson Tony started exporting coffee, both to the Mainland and to Europe and beyond.

Today, Kapoho Coffee Company is managed by Sam's Great Grand Daughter Antonia aided and abetted by a variety of countless cousins and good friends.
